‘Move-on’ period doubled to 56 days
Dec 6, 2024
We’re delighted by news that the ‘move-on’ period will be doubled to 56 days, in a six-month trial beginning on 9 December.
This policy change will have a huge impact on so many people’s lives, including those we work with at HIAS+JCORE. Crucially, with temperatures dropping, this move will prevent many new refugees from being forced into homelessness this winter.
And it will ensure that people leaving the asylum system are given a fair chance. Extending the ‘move-on’ period gives people the time they need to rebuild their lives, meaning that they can can be set up to thrive – and ensuring that receiving refugee status can again become a time of celebration.
We’re really proud to have played a part in this change, partnering with great organisations across the refugee sector, and bringing the Jewish case to MPs and policymakers.
But there’s still more work to be done. We will now be pushing the Government to make this six-month pilot permanent. This must also be matched with a lift on the ban preventing people seeking asylum from working.
These victories show what we can achieve together. Watch this space for news on how you can join our campaign to make this change permanent.
